Danny Higginbotham has praised Tyler Roberts and believes is excelling in his new role for Leeds United after the pundit appeared on Sky Sports’ Match Centre, via HITC, on Thursday morning.
What’s the word, then?
Well, the 20-year-old was known as a striker when he moved to Elland Road, but in recent weeks Marcelo Bielsa has deployed him in more of a No.10 role behind the striker.
It was similar to the position he also took up for Wales during their 1-0 friendly win against Trinidad and Tobago on Wednesday night, with Higginbotham comparing him to international teammate David Brooks, who has also moved inside – this time from the wing – at Bournemouth this term.
Higginbotham told Sky Sports’ Match Centre, via HITC: “He’s near enough playing in a number 10 role – but he has the licence to get forward.
“He seems to have adjusted fantastically well to that position. He is always looking. Can he get on the ball? And the beauty of him now is when he is picking up the ball he is facing the opposition goal. And once again, similar to [David] Brooks, he doesn’t just pass the ball and stop. He passes the ball and gets going again. He’s always looking to get on the front foot.
“I think it will do [goals will come with experience]. He’s playing a different role now where he’ll sit back. He’s creating a lot of assists and the goals will come, I don’t think there is any question about that.”
Is he right?
He certainly is, but Roberts also still has a lot of improving to do to make the role his own.
Three assists in his previous six Championship appearances in that area is a decent enough haul, but the 20-year-old will surely be disappointed that he failed to find the net during that sequence of results.

The next step for the young Welshman is as well as keeping creating chances and getting assists, also finding that golden touch in front of goal that he should have given he is a striker by trade.
